A Chapter on Raised Beds – 2019-2020, By K.Nesbitt(C)2019/2020
5-19-19 – Looking out my window at all the long grass from all our rain I am still staring at raindrops! Will it ever end? We are at 6″ of annual rainfall and its not even summer yet. I praise God for my raised beds. If it was not for them, I would not have a vegetable garden this season at all. And most of the ones planted are overflowing in growth and putting a crop of somethingout. As you can see, the grass is a foot or better tall and I don’t have a lot of my vegetable s in.. The fence with the strings hanging on it has had my tomatoes on it in the previos years, but they are still in the small reenhouse. And as you can see the large hoops are harboring tall grass that needs to be mowed, but we cannot mow as there is standing water inthe grass. You can see part of my raised beds and they are sporting plants that are doing quite well.
The Farm Totes
We made our raised beds out of recycled farm totes. The toes are containers that the farmers get their liquid chemicals in such as herbicides or fertilizers. We have some local farmers that are all to happy to give us their containers and we sanitize them, cut the tops off, cut the metal cage down , fill with soil and plant in. You can also get the containers from places that utilize the same kind of container that also is used for food and the containers will be labeled as ssuch be they from food or from the farm.
