A Chapter on Daffodils – 1 – 2019-2020, By K. Nesbitt(C)2019/2020
New Diggings
4-23-19 – Saw me acquiring a nice clump of new daffodils from a friend that was digging out her unwanteds. So these new diggings will be joining my collection! I have no clue as to what blooms they sport so will learn that next spring! I always am excited when I get a new bloom in that is a surprise! Spring, by the way, is not the optimal time to be moving daffodils, but as she had to dig out, I am always happy to get any and digging at this time pretty much disrupts their bloom for this season. Some of her bulbs were however too deep in the ground to let them bloom and so lifting them should benefit them in the following seasons.
Not The Best Time
As a rule spring bulbs are planted in the fall, but when an opportunity arises and I acquire the bulbs from dig outs from my friends, I still take them and have success in moving them. I leave the leaves on and replant the bulbs to their soil line and let them do their thing in regeneration as their leaves and or if they have blooms they will just wither and send that energy to the bulb for the following year. I will, however, cut the blooms off if they have any.
4-26-19 – we went back and got more plants at my friends and there were several buckets of daffodils to plant.
Surprises
4-29-19 – I am really excited about these newbs as they could be a multitude of ones I already have or some exciting new varieties! The bulbs are all planted now going down another fencerow along a pasture.
My Zone is Zone 5
